Dear Members,

Don't forget that our timetable is a bit different over this next two weeks starting from today, with just two classes on most days and Three Kings and Diocesan students welcome at our Ellerslie centre.

Check out the holiday timetable here and drop me a line if you're not sure what class times you should be coming to.

We are looking forward to seeing many of you in class for some fun sessions!

Auckland North Kids Camp
Registrations for the Auckland North Kids Camp are now open! This year it's being held at Shakespear Park in Whangaparaoa from 4-6 November. We've had Warrior members going every year and each time the reports back from camp are enthusiastic and glowing. If you're interested in registering your child you can check out the full camp information and registration here. A limited number of day stays are available for those who don't want to stay the full weekend.

Next TKD Kubz Grading
Our preschoolers with the cool orange belts and paw prints on their uniforms have their next grading approaching soon on Monday 24 October. We'll be getting detailed information out to these students and parents over the coming weeks.

Well that's it for now - have a great week!

Best wishes,

We will be back to our full timetable for all classes and branches from Monday 11 October onwards.

Dear Members,

Once again we find ourselves on the cusp of another Mini Kids Grading! Registrations have now closed and we are looking forward to the Term 3 Grading which is this Thursday at 4pm at our Ellerslie main centre. Grading candidates will receive more details about the grading in a separate email tomorrow or Wednesday.

The mini kids grading affects some class timetabling this week, and we also have the school holidays coming up, during which we run a slightly different class schedule so read on to find out more.

Class Changes On Thursday
There will be no 3.30pm or 4.30pm class on Thursday this week due to the Mini Kids Grading. If you normally come to these classes you are welcome to come to a class at the same time on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday this week instead. The 5.30pm class is still on but will start 15 minutes later at 5:45pm.

School Holiday Timetable
During the school holidays we run a reduced timetable for better class numbers across all classes. Three Kings and Diocesan branch students don't have training in their regular locations during the holidays and are welcome to come to training at the Ellerslie branch during the holidays instead. We still have this week of training and next week of training to go until the temporary school holiday comes into affect on 26 September. You can view the timetable here.

Special Now On at the Warrior Shop
We have our snug Warrior hoodies on special at the moment for just $40 (down from $55). There are sizes for students of all ages from XXXS all the way to XXL - and yes, parents are welcome to purchase them to! Come and try them on in the office if you're in Ellerslie, or some sizes will be coming to Three Kings and Diocesan branches to try on this week too. Some sizes have limited stock so it will be first in first served.

Have a great week!

Best wishes,

Dear Members,

Just a few quick things today! Tomorrow is the very last day to get your mini kids grading forms in - but today is the last day if you want to get them to the office in person (as the office isn't attended on Fridays). Remember you can scan completed forms to the office, or take a photo and email them to me as well.

Hack Your TKD Practice
We've published a new video on how to hack your taekwon-do practice featuring footage of the Monday 4.30pm, 5.30pm and 6.30pm classes and some great advice on how to make the most of your home practice so that you are actually seeing results from the time and effort you invest.

One of the common mistakes people make is using 'practice time' to do anything and then not seeing any measurable improvement or results. Watch the video below to see what you should be doing instead.

Have a great week!

Dear Members,

Congratulations all of our colour belt candidates on their efforts last week. After an awesome colour belt grading on Thursday we are looking forward to giving you your results, stripes and belts this week!

At the time of sending this newsletter that belts have not arrived yet but are expected to arrive today or tomorrow.

Mini Kids Grading Time
We now turn out attention toward the upcoming Mini Kids Grading which will be on Thursday 15 September. This week we are entering the pre-grading period until the final mini kids grading registration date cut off of Friday 9 September.

This means that kids need to complete their homework in their Mini Kids Handbook (the white A4 book - not to be confused with the TKD Skills Book) and bring it in to show their instructor in class to have signed off from now on. Showing homework to your instructor is a prerequisite for grading approval so make sure you get on to this ASAP if you are hoping to grade.

For those who are new to Warrior Taekwon-Do and looking forward to their first ever grading we recommend checking out this article we put together for parents and kids - old hands might find some tips useful for you too! The article also includes a link to a video showing all the techniques you will be tested on for your first mini kids grading and and some clips from a past Warrior grading to help kids and parents get ready.

Monday Car Parking
Due to safety concerns on Mondays in the Warrior car park, we are going to trial closing off the car park on Mondays only from today. Most of the car park problems come from people trying to come into the car park when it is full and using it as a turn around at the same time that children are arriving and leaving for classes and people 'parking' in the middle of the driveway and disrupting the ability for others to leave. So Monday people, the car park will be closed off today to all except staff, but of course classes are still on. If your classes are before 6pm we recommend parking in the Mitre 10 Mega car park (it's locked from around 6pm onward).

Have a great week!

Best wishes,

Dear Members,

We have a big week ahead with our August colour belt grading on Thursday - even if you are not grading, please make sure you read the following information as the grading will affect other classes and car parking on Thursday.

Changes for Thursday
  • The car park will be closed to ALL students on Thursday, right from the first class to ensure we have car parking spaces for our special guests, marshals and examiners.
  • The Thursday 3.30pm and 4.30pm classes are on as usual.
  • The Thursday 5.30pm class will go ahead as usual, however it will be 15 minutes shorter and finish at 6:15pm
  • The Thursday 6.30pm class is cancelled due to the grading. You are welcome to come along and support your classmates however.
  • Grading candidates will be sent a separate email either tonight or tomorrow with more detailed information about the grading

Under 18s Tournament Results
Congratulations to the team of 11 students who represented Warrior at the Under 18s Tournament on Sunday.

Everyone did extremely well and gained some excellence experience competing at a more serious level. The Warrior Team came away with 7 golds, 5 silvers and 7 bronze and was 4th Overall (just about giving the NZ Olympic team a run for their money!), with Benjamin Whittington gaining Best Overall Blue Belt and two of the other team members (Thomas and Anton - pictured) just one point best overall belts for their level.

Have a great training week!

Best wishes,

Dear Members,

I hope you've all had a great first week back for term 3! For the colour belts/gups, the pre-grading period is now in earnest as we head towards the 25 August grading.

Q & A Replay
Thanks to everyone who supported our Live Q & A on Friday night, It has now had 150+ views. If you haven't watched it yet, check out the replay. There's some great content in there including:

- What mini kids should work on
- How to get the most out of your practice
- What instructors are looking for in the pre-grading period
- How colour belt/gup gradings are marked
- The main things people should work on in the yellow belt pattern Dan-Gun

... plus more Taekwon-Do questions and answers and a few slightly random things. If you do watch the Q & A, comment and let us know what you think - who knows, we may do another one in the future.

Dojang Pride
Just a friendly reminder to everyone to please help keep our dojang and all the facilities clean and tidy. Last week someone lipstick kissed the mirrors and walls in the girls bathroom and caused a huge mess that was very difficult to clean off. :(  Just use common sense and be considerate.

Under 18s Registration Open
The next Under 18s Tournament will be in Papakura, at Rosehill College onSunday 21 August. Good to see a few Warriors entered already! For those who are interested, check out more and register here.

Have a great week!

Best wishes,

We've got our second colour belt grading for 2016 coming up fast (25 August) so colour belts hoping to grade will be being put through their paces over the next few weeks to see if they are ready.

Secret!
This paragraph has been redacted as it's something for Warrior members only. Sometimes we do special stuff for our members like ... well, the thing this paragraph is about. So if you're a Warrior member reading this, check your email newsletter for the details. Contact the office if you didn't receive the email newsletter.

Next Pee Wee Tournament Entry Open

Dear Members,

Wow we had a CRAZY AMAZING time at Nationals last weekend!!! We kept you up to date over Nationals weekend through our members/parents only group but there are now also a whole lot of photos from the weekend here, and you can also check out an awesome video of Miss Giles and Miss Jaduramwho faced each other in their patterns division final.

We are really proud of the whole 13-strong team from Warrior and their tenacity! Everyone put their best effort in and supported each other at all the different events.

Our Warrior results were:
PATTERNS
Roisin Giles - Gold, Kevin Matsuoka - Gold, Steve Milne - Gold, Kavita Jaduram - Silver, Diya Ciji - Silver, Michael Marcel - Silver, Jeremy Lin - Silver, Oliver Kelly - Silver, Anton Keay-Davies - Bronze, Tabitha Crump - Bronze
SPARRING
Kavita Jaduram - Gold, Diya Ciji - Silver, Tabitha Crump - Silver, Oliver Mason - Silver, Oliver Kelly - Bronze
POWER
Steve Milne - Bronze

We are also exceptionally proud of Miss Jeny Joseph who won Gup Student of the Year and Miss Kara Timmer who won Senior Sportsperson of the Year at the National Awards.
Two Farewells
This week we farewell two really awesome members of the Warrior instructing team. Miss Roisin Giles is heading to Canada for 6 months, but will be back at the end of the year. She's already got a dojang sorted in Canada as she works toward the 2017 World Championships so hopefully we will hear some updates from the northern hemisphere over the coming months!

Miss Kavita Jaduram is starting a new job soon, so sadly she leaves our instructing team but will carry on as a member. Miss J is an incredible instructor and person, and was a founding member of Diocesan Taekwon-Do in 2003. She started assisting at the branch (long before it came under Warrior) when she was 16, and has been the Head Instructor for the last 4 years. Her genuine care and support of her students has ensured this club has flourished under her leadership and dedication. We are really thankful and proud of everything that Kavita has achieved as an instructor and student and wish her all the very best with this new chapter in her life.

Weekly Warrior Biscuit with Mr Chan
New lead instructor for Monday and Wednesday 5.30pm and Monday 6.30pm Mr Matthew Chan is filming and posting a new video each week on Taekwon-Do concepts to help his students (and any other interested Warrior students!) to work on their Taekwon-Do. Check the Warrior members/parents only group for the first video and look out for the next one coming soon this week.

Holiday Timetable Continues
We're still on our holiday timetable this week which seems to be working really well. Saturday class people, don't forget Saturday class is still on, Tuesday/Thursday 6.30pm people you are going to have an amazing time with Mr Topfer this week, and parents don't forget to bring you kids to Taekwon-Do so we can exercise out any excess energy in a convenient indoors location. ;) If you're not sure when to come during the holidays (as our timetable is a bit different from usual til the end of this week) you can check it out on our website here.

Have a great week!

Best wishes,

Breakthrough (short film)

7/7/2016

Here's a short film of some of our Ellerslie kids having a go at board breaking with re-breakable boards - for most it was their first ever board break!

On the one hand they learned a lot about this very cool and fun aspect of Taekwon-Do including accuracy, proper technique, distance, speed and power - but they also learned a valuable lesson about one of the tenets of Taekwon-Do: perseverance.

In the film you get to see all their successful breaks, but most of the kids had multiple attempts before they successfully broke the board. But did they give up? No way!!!

Maybe they didn't get it the first time, but they kept on trying until they had their breakthrough, with wonderful coaching and encouragement from their instructor Mrs Sonya Robinson.
